Fitness shouldn't be just a chore

Fitness shouldn't be just a chore

Written by R. A. Stewart

Fitness should be fun, something which you cannot wait to get out of bed in the morning for. If it is something which you feel you should do rather than something which you want to do then your get fit program is not fun, it’s a chore.

That being the case you need to examine why you are doing it and find ways to make it more meaningful and fun.

Otherwise you will always find excuses to miss training and sooner or later you will fall back into your old habits and lose the benefits of your previous training.

As the saying goes, “Use it or lose it.”

It has been said many times “It takes a while to gain peak fitness but it's easy to lose it once you stop training."

If you are having trouble getting motivated then it is time to examine your whys and ask yourself, "What motivates me?"

Am I training to run my first 5k fun run?, do I want to run one mile without stopping?, or want to improve my time for the 800m at athletics. Whatever motivates you becomes your goal.

Training for your particular event can be a part of an active healthy life.

Cycling to town instead of taking the car can be part of a healthy lifestyle and saves on fuel costs as well. Walking whenever practical is beneficial for your health.

Eating healthily is important. A bad diet will undermine your efforts to get fit.

You are spoilt for choice as far as taking up a sport is concerned as every town has sporting clubs you can join, it is just a matter of finding something which you enjoy.

If you prefer to just train at your own pace then just jog around the block a few times and build on that. As your fitness levels increase, your capacity to do more training will increase.

There is no magic formula for achieving your best fitness. It is just a matter of being consistent. There is no point in going for a training run once a week, say Sunday's and taking it easy on the other six days of the week because by the time the following Sunday arrives, the benefit of the previous Sunday's run will have been lost.

Overdoing it and the beginning is not helpful, either. If you do all of your training on the one day then the result will be that you will be stiff and sore the day after. It is better to spread the mileage out over seven days and increase it as your fitness and stamina levels increase.

There is no short cut to getting fit, it takes a lot of effort and resolve to achieve your maximum fitness and the only person who can achieve that is the person you see in the mirror every morning.

Just one more thing, wearing the right kind of footwear is important, this will help you to perform at your best. Having the wrong kind of footwear will invite unwanted injuries and strains which often throw a spanner in the works of fitness enthusiasts.
