Starting your fitness journey
Starting your fitness journey
Written by R. A. Stewart
December is a month in which people sometimes reflect on the year which is almost gone.
“How could I have done better?” and “What could I have done differently?” are two questions
which come to mind. Did I achieve my goals which I set myself is a good question to ask and one
which is personal to most people.
Fitness and weight-loss goals will no doubt make their annual appearance on a lot of people’s
New Years Resolutions, but sadly these usually fall by the wayside after a few weeks.
There are keys to making goals stick and the first key is habit.
Fitness Key Number 1: Habit
Developing new habits and repeating the habit so that it becomes part of your lifestyle is crucial.
It takes discipline to train daily. It has been said that it takes 21 days to form a new habit. That is a
new habit is repeated everyday for 21 days. Perseverance is the key.
Fitness Key Number 2: Passion
Desire is the fuel which stokes passion. You must enjoy what you are doing, otherwise you will always
find an excuse to skip training, and before you know it the old laziness will return. There are so many
different types of sports you can enjoy which gives you plenty of options. Everyone is different so
choosing an activity you enjoy enhances your well being, otherwise exercise will become just another
chore.
Explore your options. Why not try them all and see what sticks. You might just find something which
you enjoy.
Fitness Key Number 3: Diet
A good diet will help you to get the most out of your chosen sport while a bad diet will undermine
your attempts at getting fit. You need to eat sensibly by cutting out foods which should not be part of
a healthy lifestyle. Common-sense will dictate what is good for you and what is not. Making a habit
of eating at fast food restaurants and drinking fizzy drinks is not good for your fitness. It all takes
self-discipline and a willingness to change.
Fitness Key Number 4: Well Being
Your self-esteem will affect how you treat your body. If you are not in the right frame of mind then
your fitness attempts will be all in mind because once you have a bad day at the office, the old habits
will creep back into your life. It is important to learn how to deal with what is going on in your life
and remove the cause of it.
Bullying is one cause of low self-esteem, often taking place in the workplace. There are protocols which
employers must abide by if a complaint of this nature is made. Sometimes the best solution is to change
jobs, but this should only be done if all other avenues have been exhausted and the situation is intolerable.
It is not advisable to just quit your job especially if you live in a small town as this may hinder your
future job seeking attempts.
