Learning to accept yourself is the real key to success

Written by R. A. Stewart

Not being accepted by others is one thing, but not accepting yourself is another altogether.

You may not have any control over people who do not accept you but you do have control over whether

you choose to accept yourself; in other words, accepting yourself is a choice, it has nothing to do with your

circumstances, how you are treated, or the body you have.

The weight loss industry and the self help industry are worth billions. People are spending a fortune in the

hope of becoming something other than who they really are.

For so many people this is an unrealistic goal.

Wouldn’t it be far better if these people made the most of who they are rather than try to change something

which is not within their nature.

All animals have their own nature; some like to run such as race horses and greyhounds, some kill other

animals, others fly or swim. Try changing the nature of any kind of animal species and see how far you can

go.

Some goodie Two shoes think that by banning greyhound racing that they will put an end to this barbaric

sport as they call it. A ban on this sport is not going to stop greyhounds doing what comes naturally to them.

They will chase after other small animals whether it is a cat, a rabbit, squirrel, or whatever.

Throughout my life there have been people, all of them women who have remarked that I am too skinny.

Yet, I have never worried about it at all, (my weight or the comments).

One day when I was in a bedsit in Aberdeen, in Scotland, a young lady from the next room said her

boyfriend had been working out at the gym. She said, “At least, he looks after himself,” insinuating that

I don’t. Yet at the time, I was running about 6 miles on the road and competing in athletics.

You have to learn to accept yourself for who you are first and foremost and ignore the comments of others.

The comments about my weight, or the lack of it as they saw it has and always has been just water off a

duck’s back to me. I was never worried about it.

It is what it is.

A low self esteem will hinder your efforts to live more healthily because when you are feeling down the

last thing you want to do is to look after yourself. There are some things you can do to at least improve

your health and well-being.

1. Accept yourself for who you are.

2. Focus on living a healthy lifestyle rather than your weight.

3. Live your own life instead of allowing others to push you around.

4. Deal with whatever is making you unhappy

5. Get help if you need it.

Making changes to your life can be a scary prospect if your life is set in stone and you are so set in your

ways. Fear is the biggest barrier to making changes. Fear of appearing a fool and fear of what others might

say and think. It is usually those very same people who put others down who are the biggest critics to those

who are trying to better themselves in some way.

Another barrier to making changes is financial concerns. Some of those who are being abused in some way,

whether it be physically, sexually, or emotionally are depend on their abusers. There are organisations

available in the community to help you deal with whatever issue you have.

It is all about making one subtle change per day. Each change you make will help to build your

self-confidence and help you to achieve your goals.
